What the best method to wire components? Up-convert or pass-through? - best upconvert receiver 2009

Hello.

In trying to determine how best to get the component cable (DVD / Blueray / Wii / etc etc) for the receiver and receiver to the TV


Do I
A) over the same settings: Compnent cable -> Receiver -> Component Cables

or

B) Up-Conversion: RCA -> Receiver -> HDMI


I'm looking at Yamaha / Onkyo receivers seem to be appreciated by Cnet, but both have qualities and poor upconversion.

This is a poor use upconversion better than a ladder?
